About SPHC
The Society for the Preservation of Historic Cements, Inc. is dedicated to education, research, documentation, and training in the history and use of historic cements, and advocates preservation of significant examples of the materials and their application.
The Central Park Conservancy is the private, non-profit organization that raises the funds, manages the capital work, and oversees every aspect of the daily care of Central Park. Our mission is to give life to the core purpose of Central Park, which is to maintain the Park as a respite from the pace and pressures of city life for all New Yorkers and visitors. We cannot do this work without the thousands of supporters who volunteer, donate, and get involved.
The Society for the Preservation of Historic Cements, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization, will assemble experts in historic masonry materials and restoration for a 2-day program to be held June 12-13, 2023 in Central Park. The Society’s past programs have been held at various historic locations, including Rosendale, NY; Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, WV; Governor’s Island, NY; Syracuse, NY and the Erie Canal; the US Capitol; the Presidio and Fort Point in San Francisco; the American Museum of Natural History, and Fort Washington, MD. Hands-On workshops were held at The Historic Preservation Training Center in Frederick, MD and at Harpers Ferry.

Presenters
Norman R. Weiss, trained as an analytical chemist, is recognized for more than fifty years of scientific work with historic structures and cemeteries. He has taught at Columbia University since 1977, and is a visiting faculty member at New York University and the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm. Prof. Weiss is a Fellow of the Association for Preservation Technology, Vice President of MCC Materials, and Director of Scientific Research, Integrated Conservation Resources, Inc. He is Consultant Editor of the UK-based Journal of Architectural Conservation, and Chairman of the Preservation Technology and Training Board of the National Park Service. He is also a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation, and the Society of Antiquaries of London.
Matt Reiley of New York City is Manager-Conservation/Lead Conservator for the Central Park Conservancy, where he and his team are responsible for the stewardship of the Park’s historic built environment. Since 2003, Reiley has played a key role in projects including the Bethesda Terrace arcade ceiling restoration, the Osborn gates, the New York Obelisk (aka Cleopatra’s Needle) and the General Sherman Memorial. Mr. Reiley is a former adjunct faculty member of the Graduate School of Architecture Planning Preservation (GSAPP) at Columbia University. He is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC). A dedicated sculptor and craftsman, he founded AbOminOg Intl. Arts Collective in a historic foundry in Trenton, New Jersey in 1999.
Chad Lausberg is Director of Technical Services at Edison Coatings, where he has worked for the past 15 years after earning his degree in Chemical Engineering at Penn State University. His work has included product development, testing, site support, and training. He co-authored an APT Bulletin paper on Improvement of Water, Salt-Scaling and Freeze-Thaw Resistances of Historic Mortar Replication Mixes, and has presented his research at a number of professional symposia.
Michael Edison, President of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Cements, Inc., has been working as a chemical engineer for 50 years. He is Founder and President of Edison Coatings, Inc., is an APT-RP Recognized Professional, and chairs ASTM C1.10.04 Task Group on Natural Cement. He has authored numerous papers and articles on masonry and concrete restoration and has been a frequent presenter at restoration industry conferences and events.
Christopher Rome has worked at the architectural firm of Thomas A. Fenniman, Architect, in New York, NY since 2000, where he specializes in the analysis and rehabilitation of existing buildings and the restoration of historic structures. The firm has developed particular expertise in the creation of sensitive designs and solutions with a commitment to high-quality work, an insistence on proper detailing and a strong regard for longevity.
